Education: giving the key to care

I believe Education is the key to Conservation. So, better if it starts early. I wish I learnt more about the environment and what our consummatory behaviors may engender elsewhere, at school. I am a conservationist at heart and try to be in actions as well.

"Only if we understand, can we care. Only if we care, we will help. Only if we help, we shall be saved."  Jane Goodall, 40 years at Gombe
Among the conservation education initiatives I was involved in:

Conserv'Session is a collective of students and postdocs that I co-founded at Kyoto University in 2015. It aims to raise awareness of certain conservation/environmental/animal welfare issues and success stories by organizing film screenings followed by discussions with invited experts, photo/video exhibitions, and public talks with collaborating organizations. Events are open to anyone and available in both English and Japanese, as much as possible. So far, we have covered topics such as species extinction, canned lion hunting in South Africa, dolphin hunting in Taiji, conservation work in war zones, companion animal abuse, climate change, ocean noise pollution by industrial ships, giraffe conservation, and more. We have collaborated with film directors, journalists, activists, conservationists, professors, and students for the creation of events.

The PrimateCast is Kyoto University Primate Research Institute's podcast, hosted by Dr. Andrew MacIntosh. I started joining the podcast in 2014 by being a correspondent in conservation-related conferences. Since then and up to 2021: I have co-produced podcasts in Hanoi (Vietnam), Bangalore (India), Brisbane (Australia), Cambridge (UK), Brazzaville (Congo), Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary (Uganda), Libreville (Gabon), Inuyama (Japan), Kinshasa (DRCongo), Chicago (USA), Hawaii (USA), Tokyo (Japan) and beyond.
*Note: Pictures with exotic/wild animals posted below were taken in particular contexts (e.g. lab, sanctuary). We would share other pictures today ;)

Roots & Shoots is the environmental education program led by the Jane Goodall Institute. It exists in over 130 countries and I helped in creating the first group in Iran in 2013. Activities such as cleaning riversides, planting trees in neighborhoods, organizing workshops about composting and trash separation at supermarkets, leading campaigns against the use of plastic bags, etc. have been running in North-East Iran. Until 2019, I was the overseas coordinator.
